Garlic price surge
In Qingdao City in Shandong province, the current garlic price is even higher than that of the Chinese spring festival period or surprisingly 2 to 3 times higher compared to the price of the same period last year.
The main causes of the garlic price surge is due to its higher purchase price last year, which reached 3 Yuan per kilo. After cold storage preservation, its cost rose further. In addition, the increasing foreign demand for the garlic also led to a further price rise of garlic in the domestic market.
Facing such a higher garlic price, some garlic growers are reluctant to sell as they expect the price may continue to increase. This kind of added more oil to the flames, resulting in more tension between garlic demand and its price.
However, based on the national statistic data, in 2015 the garlic plantation acreage in China has decreased by around 10% or 15% when compared with that of 2014.
