Mexico could become leading producer of canned pineapple

The local MP and chairman of the Special Commission for the Cultivation, Processing, and Marketing of Pineapple in the State's Congress, Juan Cruz Elvira, said Mexico had the conditions to become the leading producer of canned pineapples, a market that is currently in the hands of Asian countries and Costa Rica.

According to Cruz Elvira, Mexico has a huge advantage over these countries because of its closeness to the United States, the number one consumer of pineapples in the world.

He stated that the municipality of Isla had the best plants in the region, the state, and the social sector to pasteurize the juice and to pack the solid pineapple in high vacuum bags; which is the future in this business.

"This plant levelled the field for pineapple farmers and producers," the MP stated.

He stated that the municipality of Isla had 30,000 hectares of pineapple and that the plant was a business plan worth 6,000 million pesos per year.

He added that there were about 10,000 producers throughout the state, and noted that the pineapple and livestock were the most profitable businesses in the state.

What we have in Isla -he said- is credit for farmers and we seek to reach producers in communities such as Los Robles and the municipalities of Tampico Alto and Tierra Blanca, which would allow covering demand throughout the country soon.

Juan Cruz Elvira also stated the pineapple production was being reactivated, as production amounted to 300 containers per year and the goal was to produce 1,000 container per year.
