Fewer Israeli carrots, Orris in Europe
The European market will likely have fewer carrots and fewer Orris from Israel this season, though a drop in consumption may steady the market in the case of the former commodity. Israeli avocados are currently very scarce with high prices accompanying the commodity, and demand for grapefruit is expected to pick up again shortly.
Carrots
“If there are going to be supply gaps for carrots, they will come in March or April,” said Oron Ziv from Befresh Europe. “There are fewer carrots, but there's also less consumption, so there are still enough carrots right now.”
Orri
Orri shipments have been going out for the last five weeks, and, unlike last season when storms marred fruit and caused quality issues, the quality of fruit has been excellent this season. While too early in the year to tell with any certainty how the market will shake out, Oron believes there will be less fruit available this year. Some growers are hoping to harvest as much of the crop as they can early, though Oron said he will have Orris available into March.
“We now ship Orris to Canada, which is a good outlet,” he added. “It's an especially good outlet for small sizes, which we can hardly sell in Europe.”
Grapefruit
The grapefruit season started well, though it cooled off as the season wore on. Oron hopes things will soon reverse course.
“The market feels like it's changing,” he said. “More people are asking about grapefruit, so you can feel more demand.”
