Nicaragua to import yellow onions

According to El 19 Digital website, the Government, through the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade (MIFIC), authorized the importation of 20,000 quintals of yellow onion.

Orlando Solorzano, head of Mific, said that the traders and producers of yellow onion agreed with this measure due to the increase in prices this perishable has had in the country's markets.

Yellow onion prices increased from C $ 20.5 to C $ 23.7 per pound, according to the site.

The import mechanism adopted by the Government in coordination with traders and producers aims to stabilize the prices of some consumer products in the country when they become scarce.

Marvin Pomares, representative of the Nicaraguan Institute of Consumer Protection (Indec), told El Nuevo Diario that he expected onion imports would decrease onion prices to nearly C$ 10 per pound.

He said onion prices had increased because the onion harvest was only starting in March. "There's no onion coming out right now," he said.

Several consumers from Esteli said the measure was positive because currently, the onion's quality isn't so good and prices range between C$ 20 and C$ 25.

"We have to consume them quickly before they rot," said consumers Norma Olivas and Sara Luisa Moreno.
