Argentina: Pomegranates' promising outlook

The harvest of the ACCO and SHANY pomegranate varieties started in the farms located in Cordoba that belong to the Granadas Argentinas division of the Estancia La Paz SA group. The harvest of the WONDERFUL variety, one of the customers' favorite varieties, will start in February.

The company, which has 250 hectares planted with pomegranates in the north of the Province of Córdoba, expects this will be a highly positive season for various reasons, such as: the good weather conditions there's been so far, more mature plants which will increase fruit yields per hectare, its plant in Cruz de Eje will have a greater efficiency and productivity because of the significant investments the company recently made on sorting and packaging lines, the enlargement and improvements to its cold storage, and the economic policy implemented by the new government, which is determined to support regional economies and encourage exports.

One of its directors, Marcelo Scarafia said: "We bought a farm near the packing facilities in the first days of December. This farm has 20 hectares of Wonderful pomegranates that are only 3 years old and 80 hectares of olive trees that we are removing so we can plant them with pomegranates. We have great faith in the future of this fruit and in our country. If the weather and economic policy favor us, we will have great satisfaction."

The company decided to launch a premium version of its Wonderful variety in its traditional 4 kg boxes, but with new colors to identify it (red and blue). This year, the quality fruit is destined to the United States, England, Germany and Spain.
