More demand than supply for Polish blueberries

The upcoming Fruit Logisitica in Berlin is seen by many in the industry as a great opportunity to network and strengthen ties with other companies. This year is no exception as Polish blueberry producer and machinery distributor Milbor will be present at the fair this year, together with its partners A&B Lakewood Packing Equipment, WECO Sorting and Packaging Automation Ltd. The company works with A&B Lakewood Packaging Equipment and WECO Sorting for the European market, and Packaging Automation Ltd for the domestic market in Poland.

Milbor is a fresh blueberry producer and machinery distributor who also offers a line of fresh blueberry juice called Merry Berry juice. The juice is 100% natural and available in 3 blends: 100% blueberry, blueberry and apple, blueberry and aronia.

Poland is still a small market in terms blueberry consumption as the fruit is still quite pricey, so 90% of the blueberries in Poland are exported, mainly to Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. The Milbor's main clients are large foreign supermarket chains as well as local Polish groceries.

The blueberry business is booming in Poland and according to Maciej Chmielewski, "There is still a lot of potential for the Polish blueberry market. Most of the growers did not have major problems selling their blueberries so far. We often have more demand than the volume of the fruit we can offer, but we also observe that the supply is trying to catch up."

This large demand has also meant that the Russian ban had virtually no effect on blueberries as it did for apples.

As with everywhere else, this season was really strange because of the weather. It was very dry and hot, however, Maciej said that growers with good irrigation systems didn't experience any problems.

The blueberry harvest in Poland is from July through the end of September.
