Record avocado consumption predicted for big game week

Millions of Americans will tune into the 50th national
football championship game held at Levi’s Stadium
in Santa Clara, California on February 7. According
to the Hass Avocado Board, a record 278 million will
be consumed during the Big Game week. That’s enough avocados to fill a football field, from end zone to end
zone, over 53 feet high!

Recognizing the opportunity the Big Game presented, the California Avocado Commission (CAC) began promoting California avocados for one of America’s favorite sporting events decades ago. Over time, the Big Game has grown to be one of the top three avocado consumption events each year.

This year, Draeger’s Market, Gelson’s Markets, Lunardi’s, Mi Tierra and Mollie Stone’s will carry California avocados for Big Game week. Other local accounts are expected to transition to California avocados in time for the Big Game or shortly thereafter.

While the tonnage of California avocados harvested in time for the Big Game is limited, the event and avocado Big Game promotions by other sources of supply help to move a large volume of avocados out of inventory. These promotions generate excitement and awareness of avocados, setting the stage for the launch of the fresh, premium California avocado season.
