Argentina: San Juan produces strawberries

A group of farmers managed to produce strawberries in the northwestern province of San Juan thanks to the work to adapt and manage varieties boosted by the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA). Iglesia is a department located in the northwest of San Juan, at the foot of the Andes, where people thought it wasn't possible to produce strawberries due to agricultural and ecological conditions.

Following the adaptation task performed by Inta, this crop is currently a diversification alternative for 12 farmers who harvest the fruit and give it an added value by preparing sweets that they can sell to tourists.

"This culture began when small trials were made to demonstrate that it was possible to cultivate it," said Maria Teresa Fernandez, from the INTA Iglesia.

She also highlighted that the field trials conducted had been conducted to learn which varieties were best suited to the area, and which technologies allow this production.
