Patrick Stoffels, BUD Holland:

Mini-pineapple still mainly used as decoration

BUD Holland in Maasdijk, Netherlands has mini-pineapples (baby pineapples) all year round from Mauritius and South Africa, "Sales always peak in December, but that is also when production in Mauritius is at its lowest. In South Africa, El NiƱo caused problems this year. The market is relatively stable throughout the rest of the year. Right now production is fairly normal. We expect there to be a peak in sales around Easter time," says Patrick Stoffels.

The baby pineapples are of the Victoria variety from Mauritius, "The market for mini-pineapples is an independent market, and is completely separate from the normal pineapple market. We sell this product to wholesalers throughout (Eastern) Europe. Although people do eat the mini-pineapples, they are still being used mainly for decoration. The biggest difference between the variety from Mauritius and the variety from South Africa is that the core of the pineapple from Mauritius can be consumed. This is why BUD Holland mainly concentrates on the variety from Mauritius," says Patrick.
