The real has declined strongly in value since 2011. Compared to the Euro value the real was only a third in value in 2015 compared to 2011. Compared to the dollar the real dropped even further in value. The dollar was worth a quarter more than the Euro in 2015 compared to 2011. This decrease continued into the start of 2016.
The Netherlands the most important buyer by far
The Netherlands is the most important buyer of fresh fruits and vegetables in Brazil by far. In 2015 the export to the Netherlands was even of a record size. It was an amount of 300,000 tonnes, which is 38% of the total. In recent years it was repeatedly a small 40%. The United Kingdom is the second buyer.
80% to EU countries
The sales is very strongly focussed on EU countries. In 2015 the share of all EU countries in the Brazilian export of fresh vegetables was almost 80%. Of the entire Brazilian export around a sixth goes to EU countries.
Two countries that stand out are the United Arab Emirates and Bangladesh. A relatively high amount of lemons go to the UAE. The export to Bangladesh consists solely of apples.
Most export from September to December
The export of Brazilian fresh fruit and vegetables is the largest in the months September - December. This is also the period in which the main Brazilian export products, melons and mangos, are on the market. Of the important products, only apples have a different export season. The Brazilian export season of apples runs from February to June.
Most orange export to industry by far
Large amounts of oranges are produced in Brazil. The USDA expects a harvest of 16.7 million tonnes for the coming season. Brazil is the main producers of oranges at a distance. The United States and China follow at a suitable distance with each around 7.5 million tonnes. The Spanish production is over 3 million tonnes. Brazil only exports a very small part as fresh product each year.
