Denimpex has premier with Japanese onions

Denimpex will receive the first onions from Japan next week. "As far as we know, this is the first time that Japan has exported onions to Europe," says Danny Deen.

History is repeating itself at Denimpex. It was the company's founder, Abraham Deen, who brought overseas onions from the souther hemisphere to Europe as one of the pioneers. At the time this was with Vecon from Tasmania and with Produce Market from New Zealand. Now these origins are unmissable in the assortment of onion importers and supermarkets, but at the time it was something special.

"35 years later and in our third generation of the family company, we are the first to import onions from Japan. The onions are packaged in 20 kg carton boxes and the size is 90mm+. Due to the situation in Europe where the larger sizes are becoming scarce because Spain has a smaller harvest and due to climatological conditions the quality leaves much to be desired, we see a gap in the market. It will be another four to six weeks before the first Chilean coarse onions arrive," says Danny.

Denimpex is working with the large Japanese fruit and vegetable cooperation Hokuren, which has 110,000 tonnes of onion cultivation in Japan and will supply Denimpex exclusively for the next five years. The first season will be seen as a pilot. "Outside of this new origin we will continue to import onions from all corners of the world such as South Africa, Tasmania, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, India and Egypt, all colours white, yellow, red will be available in various packaging," concludes Danny.
