"We hope for an agreement in late 2016"

China: boom of Peruvian mango

"We are a Beijing company and we specialise in fruit import and export. We trade a wide range of fruit varieties. 70% of the business we do is import, 30% is export. Import fruits are of better quality and taste. In addition, foreign governments have investing in policies that promote agriculture development and export. This trend helped us launch our business," explains Wenjie Cui from Gaobeidian Runzeyuan. The company import pomelo from Israel, citrus from Egypt, pitaya from Vietnam, durian from Thailand and kiwi from Italy.

“In 2015, our sales in terms of volume were up by 30% compared to 2014. However, prices of some products decreased by 20% to 30% due to the economic down-swing. Currently, we are involved in talks with the Peruvian Embassy to start the import of mangoes from Peru. We are hopeful that we can get an agreement on this later this year.”

“Before we start the import of a new product, we conduct market research. We have to make sure the quality of the goods we offer is high and we want to establish stable relationships with our suppliers and clients. We search local fruit growers to buy our products from. We sell to high-end clients in big cities, mainly in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Our Chinese clients are branded supermarkets and fruit shops. In addition, we export apples and kiwi from Shanxi province, winter jujube from Shandong and red grapes. Our export destinations are countries in South-east Asia. Our largest export market is India.

“Market demand changes throughout the seasons. To meet this, we keep changing import volumes and fruit varieties. The Spring Festival is arriving so we increased our fruit imports. We have a sales history that helps us assess changing demand. In addition, we have stable clients that keep us informed about their markets and clients. For example, we have exported to Caifu, a large Thai importer, for over 6 years.

For example, Spring Festival is coming, we've planned to import more fruits. Compared with our competitors, our advantage is that our professional team has years' of sales experience which makes it easier for us to notice potential market and grip the chance. In addition, we have a stable business relationship with our clients, for example, we have been in business relationship with Caifu, a fruit import company in Thailand for 6 years. "
