UK: Only 1 big supermarket chain gets a Christmas bonus - Kantar
Only one of the U.K's biggest retailers gained market share in the ultra-competitive Christmas sales period with discount stores getting a big festive bonus, according to the latest industry figures. The figures, from Kantar Worldpanel for the 12 weeks ending January 3, showed no Christmas uplift for the British grocery market as a whole as consumer spending 0.2% on last year, thanks to falling prices. Discount retailers such as Lidl and Aldi, as well as premium brand Waitrose, the Co-operative and Sainsbury's "successfully grew ahead of the market and were the share winners over Christmas," the consumer data researcher said. Sainsbury's – one of the "big four" UK supermarkets along with Tesco, Asda and William Morrison – was the best performing of the traditional supermarkets, according to Kantar Worldpanel's figures. Thrillist asked AggData to share statistics on the largest concentration of locations in each state. They excluded convenience stores, but did include broader retailers if food is a considerable part of their business.

Spar celebrates 45 outlets at OMV petrol stations in Hungary
As of January 2016, Spar has opened 45 of its Express shops at OMV filling stations across Hungary, the Dutch retailer said in a press release. Exempt from recent legislation banning Sunday shopping in Hungary, these outlets offer round-the-clock shopping and carry basic household items and Spar private label products. (esmmagazine.com)

AU: Woolies’ ‘free fruit for kids’ unhygienic
Woolies’ “free fruit for kids” initiative has backfired, with shoppers complaining the basket of apples and bananas is unhygienic. The supermarket giant announced the program in November, claiming it would “help children eat their recommended two serves of fruit a day and is part of Woolworths commitment to inspire a healthier Australia.” (news.com.au)

Roundy's sues Dominick's Finer Foods for unpaid property Taxes

US: Price Chopper and Market 32's trailers with fruit/veg graphics win

Safeway is coming to Florida
Tampa Bay's last remaining Albertsons will be converted to a Safeway store — and get a major makeover in the process. The grocer on Monday said that it would convert three Albertsons stores in Florida to Safeway stores, including the store in Largo. The company is investing nearly $10m in the conversion, expanding the space for fresh and specialty foods. (bizjournals.com)

Turkish retailer Migros plans 2016
Turkish retailer Migros closed 2015 with a turnover of close to €2.89bn and plans to replicate the same amount of growth and investment in the coming year, according to borsagundem,com. The retailer opened 200 new stores in 2015 and created 4,500 new jobs, for 2016 they aim to open between 150-200 new stores and currently have 47 stores open abroad, where they also plan to open more. Their growth strategy for 2016 involves having more than 6m households signed up to their Money Club Card, as well as increasing their own brand range, which they reduced the prices of essential items by 20% last year. The retailer also values product variety with over 3,000 kinds of products to 300 m2 and plans to introduce higher investment steps with their partner Anadolu Industry Holding. (borsagundem.com)

UK: Morrisons announces store closures 
Morrisons is to close seven stores with the potential loss of nearly 700 jobs despite achieving a surprise increase in sales over Christmas . Shares in the company soared 12% as the company revealed a much better-than-expected 0.2% rise in sales at established stores in the nine weeks to 3 January, its first positive figure for four years. City analysts had expected like-for-like sales, which exclude the contribution from new stores or losses from store closures, to fall 2%. Morrisons said customers were starting to return to its stores with like-for-like transactions up 1.3% in its core supermarkets during the period. (theguardian.com)

Vietnamese retailers brace for 7-Eleven entrance
According to Nikkei, in July 2015, the group’s US-based subsidiary Seven Eleven Inc. signed a contract with IFB Vietnam, owner of Pizza Hut’s Vietnamese restaurant chain, to open its first 7-Eleven convenience store in Ho Chi Minh City. The number of establishments is set to reach 100 in the next three years and 1,000 within ten years. Seven & I Holding’s expansion to Vietnam is likely to intensify competition in the retail sector as it coincides with both domestic and foreign retailers’ plans to expand operations in Vietnam.
