Consistent supply of organic bananas

With its latest expansion of 370 acres last year, Organics Unlimited continues to increase the acreage from which it sources its organic bananas. Current considerations include expanding acreage to two new countries and ensuring an increased supply of a uniform quality of organic bananas for shipment to Asia and North America.

“We have extensive acreage in the Mexican state of Colima that are farms owned and operated by Organics Unlimited,” said Mayra Velazquez de Leon, CEO of Organics Unlimited. “In addition, we manage farms and their banana production in both Colima and Michoacán and work closely with growers in Ecuador to provide our customers with high quality organic bananas.” The company is looking into production in Peru and the Dominican Republic in the coming years. Sourcing bananas from diverse regions ensures the company can offer a continual supply of organic bananas even if there are weather problems in one of the producing countries.

Throughout its expansion, the company has always maintained its roots in Mexico. Velazquez de Leon explained that the country will always be important, both because of the company's history and because the country has a climate very conducive to growing organic bananas that lacks many of the diseases that commonly afflict bananas.

The United States, Canada and Japan are the company's biggest markets. North American shipments are mostly funnelled via truck through a warehouse in San Diego and Japanese exports are shipped directly from Mexico. The logistics system helps the company keep a low carbon footprint. It also guarantees customers a reliable supply of fruit, something which Velazquez de Leon believes distinguishes Organics Unlimited from other organic banana suppliers.

“We distinguish ourselves from competition by being a brand that’s come to be known consistently for high quality organic bananas,” she noted. “We also distinguish ourselves through our GROW label, which is our social responsibility program that provides resources and opportunities to the communities surrounding our banana farms in Mexico and Ecuador.”
