Austria: heat and drought reduces vegetable harvest

Due to the dry, hot summer Austrian farmers have a significant smaller yield this year. The Austrian farmers have harvested only 560,200 metric tons of vegetables this year. This is a decline of 19 % compared to last year.

According to the Statistics office in Austria (Statistik Austria) the decline was caused by the dry, hot summer of 2015. Cabbages and other leafy vegetables had damaged leaves or prematurely bolted. Crops that couldn’t be irrigated showed poor seed formation and growth deficits.

Decline in harvest of some vegetable varieties compared to 2014:
Onions- 18 %
Carrots- 38 %
Cabbages, leafy greens and stem vegetables- 20 %
Lettuce- 10 %
Tomatoes- 3%
Cucumbers- 4 %
