Lychees from Madagascar on European market

Lychees exported by plane from Madagascar have arrived on the European market, notably in France and Germany. Commercialisation began at the start of last week.

Price of lychees from Madagascar is more competitive than Mauritian lychees, which were also on the shelves last week. Lychees from Madagascar are currently being sold for about €8/kilo compared to €7.50-€9.50/kilo for lychees from Mauritius. However, the Toamasina Horticultural Technical Centre has said that the “Late maturation of lychees from Madagascar will probably delay the official harvest opening date for exports by sea”.

Like last year, two ships have been organised to supply the European markets for Christmas and the New Year festivities. (First ship expected to leave on the 23/11 and the second on the 27/11, each carrying 7,000 tons of cargo). The first ship will arrive around the 11th December, a Friday, which will limit the possibility of weekend sales.
