The third edition of the National Fight Against Food Wastage Day took place on Friday 16th October. The day before the Climate Summit, COP21, in Paris, the Minister of Agriculture launched the “Anti-waste, also for the climate” campaign, to link food issues with environmental issues.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year, i.e. one third of food produced in the world. In France, 20 kilos of food per capita, per year, is thrown away, i.e. a €400 loss per household. A figure which is even more shocking when we know that 795 million people in the world suffer from malnourishment.
A meeting took place during the national day on Friday to review commitments made by professionals in the food supply chain. A programme establishing the main objectives for 2016 was launched, which included : setting up a group to study developments on regulations concerning expiry dates and creating a convention allowing large to medium retailers to make donations to charities.
