Salvo Laudani (Oranfrizer)

Italy: Extended production calendar saved oranges

Sicilian company Oranfrizer will be an exhibitor at the next Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid. "The introduction of new varieties and rootstocks resistant to the Tristeza virus and with great quality and volumes enabled us to extend the production calendar, so our turnover has increased," explained marketing manager Salvo Laudani.

"In Sicily, around 30 thousand of the 70 thousand hectares of oranges and tangerine-like varieties are affected by the Tristeza virus. Plants suffer and produce less making room for competitors. Spain, for example, shipped 200 thousand tons of citrus fruit to Italy between January and June. We risk losing a share of the market which would be difficult to recover."

Oranfrizer's juice line. Natural flavours combined with the nutritional properties of blood oranges, oranges, PGI Sicilian blood oranges, tangerines, pink grapefruit and pineapples. No added preservatives, sugar and colourings, just slightly pasteurised.

"We managed to survive because we have extended our production calendar. Many companies finished their blood orange stocks in late March, whereas we continued until early May. Prices rose and we can talk about a 3-4% turnover growth in the first six months of 2015."

"The future depends on the weather - the hailstorm that hit us a few weeks ago damaged 2,500 hectares but it seems that the rain will favour bigger grades, especially for the medium and medium-late varieties."

"We will attend Fruit Attraction in Madrid (Hall 7, Stand B09) with the objective of meeting international clients, with whom we have already arranged meetings."
