BLE market report CW 39/15

Lettuce offer reduced due to weather

Lettuce
Generally, the cold weather reduced sales; demand visibly diminished. In the iceberg lettuce business, it was mostly German produce that participated, with Dutch produce in a secondary role. The supply was manageable, or slightly limited. There was no buildup of sales pressure. The quotations remained at the same level or went up marginally. Only in Berlin did they weaken with domestic batches, because of a pressing need to unload shipments. The inflows of head lettuce were generally adequate to cover for the unsolicited demand. The courses of domestic parties did not change considerably, but occasionally fluctuated with the quality: those of the Belgians more often successively dropped, which forced sales. Colored lettuce, primarily from Germany, are clearly provided. Therefore the sector was able to keep the demand mostly constant, regardless of the slow clearing of stock. The availability of domestic field lettuce grew without generating the needed sales. A kilogram would invoke a maximum of € 6. The trade in endive gradually revived, whereupon price increases were sometimes established.

Apples
Domestic produce is pushing onto the market at an increasing rate, with an expanded product range. The demand was generally not enough to clear out all the stocks. The quotations inevitably dropped, especially for the German batches.

Pears
Excellent parties, free of any defects, were quickly turned over and could be delivered for almost unchanged ratings. Because of the compressed supply, price decreases were sometimes established in the standard offers.

Table grapes
Also when the distribution faltered somewhat on occasion, access intensified by the weekend at the latest. This development guaranteed at least a constant course. However, with exclusive offers it unquestionably tended upward.

Strawberries.
The autumn weather noticeably reduced availability. No profit was to be gained however, since the demand reduced in a similar fashion. Only products of convincing quality could be accommodated to a stable demand.

Peaches and nectarines
The low temperatures worked to inhibit both sales and supply. The quotations frequently remained constant. However, they repeatedly went up due to the limited supply.

Plums
The predominantly domestic supplies were not sufficient to fully meet the demand. The phase of high prices went on unabated, because they partially went even further up driven by volume.

Kiwis
Like the by now sparse Chilean imports, the shipments from New Zealand have noticeably diminished. With an offer that was not too lush, the ratings frequently remained stable, and repeatedly tended upwards.

Lemons
The Argentinian and South African fruits covered the demand only approximately. Therefore, the demands frequently remained at a constant level. Even products in weakening condition could be sold without great losses.

Bananas
On one hand, trade went calmly and the supply was tuned to an unagitated demand. The ratings hardly changed. On the other hand, their reception improved, which entailed increases in price.

Cucumbers
The domestic offer of snake cucumbers reduced in similar fashion to the Dutch and Belgian. The quotations, following their regular trend, moved further up; though not free of certain fluctuations.

Tomatoes
Mid-European production slowed down. Demand could not be sufficiently met. Courses fastened throughout the entire assortment. Especially for cherry tomatoes from the Netherlands and Italy, they frequently and clearly went up.

Capsicum
The Dutch clearly dominated the trade. As a result of ä less strongly pronounced demand, the ratings of most parties subsided. However, the green cultivars successively ascended coming up to the weekend.

Onions
The onion business was exclusively fed by deliveries from Spain. Because their size was not as limited as predicted, the expected price increases did not come to pass.
