Tunisia supplies Europe with chilli pods
Tunisian company manager Agri Didon reports: “There are 30 different types of chilli pods in our country, especially Starter and Baklouti. Therefore we are able to make our products available on the domestic and foreign market.”
Chilli pods are produced in the hottest areas of the Mediterranean, especially in Tunisia. In the last five year, the spice was cultivated on 19,000 hectares, with an average production of 280,000 tons. The main producing areas are Capo Bon, Kairouan and Sidi Bouzidin in the north of the country.
Chilli pods are cultivated in open fields, or out of season in greenhouses. In this fashion there is a wealth of produce available for the local market and export.
Part of the production is eaten fresh, another part is meant for further processing and is made into sauces such as Harissa. The rest is dried and ground up. The fresh chilli pods are stored in plastic or cardboard boxes.
