Morocco continues increasing avocado volumes

Spain: Bacon avocado harvest starts with 50% lower production

The harvest of organic Bacon avocados has already started in Granada, where a significant reduction in the variety's production volumes, of between 40 and 50%, is expected. The reasons for this decline, according to Fernando Martín, manager of the Granada-based producer and marketer Procam, are last year's bumper crop, which caused the trees to yield less this year, and the fact that the spring was too warm. "It will be a short campaign," he affirms.

"At the moment, the avocado supply on the market is not great and demand is pushing prices up. At other times we have had to face more competition from Peruvian Hass avocados, but this year there are smaller volumes," explains Fernando Martín. There is also less competition with organic avocados than with the conventional, as "only Peru and Mexico supply some small volumes and we compete primarily with Malaga."

Nevertheless, Fernando stressed that Morocco is significantly increasing its production. "Last year they already had an acceptable production and this season they expect to produce even more. We believe that they will get a significant share of the market in the coming years, but fortunately for us, they do not have organic avocados."

"The Bacon variety only accounts for 10% of our production," says Fernando. "Hass avocados are much more demanded, so we are focusing our efforts on this variety, whose harvest we expect to start around early to mid-November. Production this year will be smaller, although we don't yet know to what extent."

According to Fernando Martín, the demand for organic avocados is increasing every year, and the supply of organic products in general is growing at an even faster rate. "This year there will be no problems to cover the avocado demand, but there may well be for other organic products, as production is increasing in an uncontrolled manner. It is a situation that should be regulated somehow."

Procam currently has 240 hectares devoted to the production of organic avocados in different locations across the Costa Tropical. The fruit is exported mainly to France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany and Scandinavia. "Germany is a key buyer of Bacon avocados, although Hass avocado shipments have also increased significantly over the last two seasons," he points out.
