China withdraws Chile import restrictions

According to the Chilean Fruit Export Association, Chilean avocado is currently exported primarily to the USA and Europe. During the 2014-2015 season, the total export volume of Chilean avocados was 67,626 tons: 45,000 tons to Europe and 10,000 tons shared between Latin-America, USA and the Far-East.

After discovery of the drosophila fly, China applied strict import restrictions to the three main avocado production regions; Coquimbo, Valparaiso and Santiago. Recently China narrowed the restrictions down to an area with a radius of 27 km, around the regions affected by drosophila.

Fruit export to China, including Hass avocados, will benefit most. At the same time, other types of fruit from these regions including grapes, blueberries, apples, kiwis and plums no longer require cold treatment when exported to China.
