Peru: Biological wastewater plant to treat agro-industrial waste

Regarding its commitment to environmental care, Camposol is making efforts to treat the effluents generated during its agro-industrial activities. Therefore, it has implemented an important project that consists in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR, in Spanish) with an important biological system.

This work, pioneer in Peru, started some months ago and it becomes real today. The system allows regulating water quality parameters such as (Ph, temperature, BOD, COD, turbidity, among other) and results in water of better quality that creates in turn an ecosystem that uses the wastes in water as food.

This system consists in growing aquatic plants, which are in charge of “eating” the organic matter suspended on water, creating so a pleasant landscape view for the environment. Furthermore, a fauna ecosystem (toads and birds of different wild species), which eat insects, plant sprouts, and young algae, was created.

Camposol’s Environmental Coordinator, Jhon Pérez Fernández, stated that this system provides benefits for improving water quality parameters, reducing odors and improving the scenic landscape. It also prevents significantly the power consumption and chemical treatments used in traditional methods to treat wastewater, as these plants work as natural filters and are resistant to temperature change.

The wastewater treatment plant has 05 wells, which are covered with a geo-membrane. This wastewater is reused for irrigating green areas, which improve the scenic landscape of a conventional PTAR to a green and environmentally friendly one.
