Demand for Tommy Atkins mango variety decreases

Ready-to-Eat“-Mangos popular at UNIVEG

Mangos are, not only in Germany but worldwide, the most loved exotic fruit. And they have become a standard fruit in every fruit and vegetable stand. “The demand for ripe and fibre-free mangos has grown in the last three years,” explains Inke Steffen of UNIVEG Germany. “The customers changed their shopping habits, moving away from the varieties such as Tommy Atkins towards ripe "Ready-to-Eat“-Mangos. This caused a strong decrease in the demand of the Tommy Atkins variety.”

Small and manageable amounts of Tommy Atkins
“The varieties Kent, Keitt and Palmer are currently in very high demand,” according to the spokesperson, “These mangos are fibre-free and they are especially suitable for the ripening process. Because of the growing popularity of these varieties the Tommy Atkins Mango, with fibre, is only available in small and manageable amounts.”

The expert explains: “The demand for mangos is the highest from October to June, and the demand is lower in the summer because of the availability of many other summer fruits. We are happy with the positive developments of the last years. The sale of mangos, especially Ready-to-Eat-Mangos, has strongly increased.

Largest quantities come from Puerto Rico and Brazil
UNIVEG Germany imports the sweet and exotic mangos from Puerto Rico and Brazil. “They currently deliver the largest quantities. The season in Senegal is at its end and we are waiting for the start of the harvest in Israel and Spain,” states Inke Steffen.

Import will increase in week 39
“The imported mangos have a high quality,” continues Steffen, “The available sizes vary from 6 to 12 and the most popular sizes are 7, 8 or 9.” However at the moment the supply has decreased a bit, states the spokesperson of UNIVEG. “The supply is low at the moment. We expect in week 39 again an increased supply.” With the end of the summer season coming the demand for mangos at the German market will increase again, UNIVEG is sure of that.
