The Spanish production of mangoes is no less than 50% lower this year, says Kenneth Meyer of Natural Tropic S.L., which grows mangoes, avocados and cherimoyas in Spanish Málaga. He expects to start packaging the Osteen mangoes in week 36/37. As causes for the halved production, the producer names the 'off-year', but also the climatological conditions in spring. "The trees had a lot of volumes/kg last year, which meant they didn't recover well. Last year, we started with prices around 6 Euro, but that price will start a lot higher now. Prices of over 10 Euro will not be a surprise."
Last year, Natural Tropic produced 6,000 tonnes of avocados and 2,500 tonnes of mangoes, both conventional and organic. Last year, the company still invested in a production acreage of 45 hectares for the mango and avocado cultivation. "A part of the production will remain on the local market. We also export to countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands. Because of the expected high prices, it's not entirely clear yet how the export will develop," Kenneth concludes.
