Peru: Tangelo producers migrate to other varieties

According to Sergio Del Castillo Valderrama, general manager of the Association of Citrus Producers of Peru (Procitrus), Peru exported 23,000 tons of tangelo between January and July, i.e. 12.5% less than the 26,300 tons shipped in the same period last year.

The decline, he stated, is the result of farmers migrating to other citrus varieties because the tangelo is going through a price crisis.

"Tangelo returns were better than what they currently are. Additionally, it's already a limited market. It's not as massive as the tangerine market," he said.

In that sense, the general manager said Procitrus has allocated more tangelo to the domestic market this year due to prices. "Producers are better off being paid more than 1 S/ per kilo at the farm than exporting. "
