High season for tomatoes from the Rhineland

The Rhenish tomato growers select the species mostly for the taste of the fruit. They mainly plant species with smaller fruits – though with a more intense taste. Because of this, the yields are indeed smaller, but the taste experience for the consumer is far greater. Ans so, colourful variety is popular. Yellow, green-black striped, cocktail-, cherry-, roma- and plum tomatoes are up for grabs just like the classic red and round tomatoes.
The tomatoes are grown in greenhouses in the Rhineland on a surface area of almost 50 hectares. The majority is harvested and marketed as vine tomatoes. The tasty fruits are ripening in the greenhouses of around 25 Rhenish tomato horticulturists until well into December.
Tomatoes have a broad range of applications. Raw as a salad, in a soup, or as an ingredient for pasta sauce: there are no limits to the imagination. Eating tomatoes is an extremely healthy pleasure. Numerous vitamins and minerals and a low calorie content are optimal for a healthy diet.
Contrary to many other kinds of vegetables, tomatoes should never be kept in the fridge, because the aroma suffers at low temperatures. Tomatoes can easily be kept at room temperature for several days.
