Argentina: Mango area triples in Jujuy

The INTA and the government of Jujuy are promoting mango crops, which have a great impact on regional economies, to meet the growing demand, increase profitability and replace imports.

With a privileged location, Argentina’s Northwest leads the national production of tropical and subtropical fruits because they are an alternative to vegetables and citrus fruit that have a great impact on regional economies. The government of Jujuy and INTA are promoting the domestic production of mango to gradually replace imports.

"Even though it is an incipient culture in Jujuy, the area cultivated with mangoes tripled," said Aldo Arroyo, director of INTA Yuto, Jujuy. "Thanks to the Mango Promotion Plan, implemented three years ago by the provincial government and the INTA, we went from 50 to 150 hectares and a production of 2,250 tons in the hands of 200 small producers and some SMEs," he added.

Mango crops are a productive alternative that enables diversification from traditional fruits and compliments horticulture. It offers producers the possibility of making income and working in the off season of other activities.

"The mango has a huge consumption potential," said Arroyo, referring to the growing domestic demand that exists for fresh mango in the local and regional markets, as well as mango for agribusiness to make sweets, juices and ice cream.

"Jujuy has the agronomic capacity to produce the mangoes that are being imported and thus cover the niche market, which so far is only covered by Brazil, as well as the growing demand," he stressed.
