The new 'safe zone' in Calais has considerably improved the unsafe situation at the crossing zone, but, according to EVO (a Dutch platform and interest group for shippers), it may prove inefficient if an emergency situation arises. Yesterday the British Home Secretary announced that France and Great Britain believe the new security zone has a capacity for 230 trucks.

"The proposal for a zone that can accommodate 230 trucks is sufficient under the current circumstances," says Martijn Duijndam from EVO. "But it may not be enough in the case of emergencies." The British economy is currently growing faster than the European economy," says Duijndam. "Therefore the question is whether space for 230 trucks is adequate."
In addition, ferry company MyFerryLink is currently selling ships to DFDS, which, according to Duijndam, will cause more trucks to travel from Calais to Great Britain via the Eurotunnel. EVO will be keeping an eye on the situation in Calais and other crossing areas for the time being.
