Italy: Good production and quality for summer pears

The harvesting of early Morettini, Santa Maria and Carmen pears started this week in Emilia-Romagna.

80% of domestic pears is produced in the Ravenna, Ferrara, Bologna and Modena provinces. According to some technicians, the general situation is the following.

Santa Maria.

Production is abundant in Ravenna and more regular in Modena thanks to the April/May drops. The difference is mainly down to the various implants and thinning operations.

The rainfall in May may have caused a few problems for stonefruit but favoured pear trees. The only problem now might be caused by the medium-small grades caused by the high temperatures. The same can be said for the later varieties such as William, red William, Conference, Decana, Kaiser and Abate.

Carmen.

The hot weather may even cause a few burns on the fruit and leaves, but it is highly unlikely so far.

As regards quality, sunlight activates the transformation of starch in sugar, so the fruit should be tastier and less watery than last year.
