"Nico Veldhoen: "The weather is the buyer"

Warm weather clears up melon market

The warm weather has given the sales of Spanish melons a considerable boost. "The prices were still at a very low level two weeks ago. The season started late with a lot of large sizes, which always counter productively for the price and we also had bad weather for quite a while. But last week's warm weather pulled up the prices," says Nico Veldhoen of Staay-Hispa. "There are a lot of yellow melons on the market, often of a large sorting and for low prices. Galia melons are doing quite well and Spain hardly has any competition here. Cantaloupe is doing the best as far as price formation is concerned at the moment. The Piel de Sapo melons are also getting good prices. Last year they were being given away but this isn't the case now," continues the importer.

The price level of watermelons was pennies for a few weeks, but last week it came back to a normal level, purely due to the heat," says Nico. There are watermelons of all different origins - like every year - for both the Western and the European markets. This competition has always been there, until the heat appears, like last week, after which the market suddenly looks a lot more friendly. If the weather conditions continue to be this sunny, I expect us to keep reasonably good prices. They won't be expensive, but not cheap either. The weather is the buyer."
