Polish apple prices up

Counter to what many believed would happen at the start of this year's apple season in Poland, prices for apples are high. Despite concerns about the effects of the Russian embargo on prices, the season is ending on a high note for Polish suppliers.

“A lot of apples were sold to processing and a lot of Polish people are eating more apples ,” noted Karol Jakubowski of Inter-Trade. “So, finally, at the end of the season, prices for apples went up.” While the market started off slowly, with prices about 12 or 13 cents per kilogram, prices have shot up to around 50 cents per kilogram.

Inter-Trade exports apples to Western Europe, but domestic prices have been sufficient that Jakubowski said they haven't shipped there recently. Exports typically go to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Belarus.

The Russian embargo on European goods has prevented Inter-Trade from exporting to Russia this season, but Jakubowski has heard rumors that some Polish fruit has found its way into Russia through a network of middlemen. While few people openly acknowledge that this is taking place, it's widely regarded as plausible, and it might have something to do with the better-than-expected apple prices.
