Producers of vegetable and poultry from Cibao said the ban on certain imports from the Dominican Republic that starts this Friday, which includes products such as citrus and pasta, and that used to enter Haiti via the province of Dajabón through fortnightly binational markets, would be a hard blow to those sectors.
The Haitian Minister Paul Evans announced that, starting Friday, they would ban the entry of 33 products from the Dominican Republic, including citrus fruits, pasta, coffee, poultry, eggs, cabbage, green bananas, plantains and vegetables.
Humberto Collado, president of horticultural Constanza and Jarabacoa, stated that if the measure takes effect, hundreds of growers would be affected. He said they sent between 30 and 45 truckloads of vegetables to the binational market in Dajabón every week. He also said he saw no reason why Haiti didn't want to receive the products sold from Dominican Republic, as they complied with sanitary measures and were of good quality.
