US(TX): Launch of online fresh produce store

“Three weeks ago, we launched our online store for fresh produce,” says Brent Erenwert with Brother’s Produce. Purchase from the online store is limited to customers in Houston, TX and surrounding areas. “One of our biggest kept secrets is that we have sold to the public for 30 years, but just never really advertised it,” mentioned Erenwert. Although conventional produce is available in the online store, the organic segment makes up the majority of sales. “Availability of organic produce in the city is limited and if you find an abundance it’s rather expensive,” explains Erenwert. “We are trying to fill that gap and feel the time is right to grow this concept on a greater scale. The economy is strong enough and people seem willing to spend more money on produce, especially organic.”

Bulk sizes
Brother’s Produce targets customers who buy in bulk. “We aren’t selling small pack sizes. Organic bananas for instance are sold by a 40 lbs. case and plums are sold in cases of 50-60 pieces. It is going to be a certain target of customer we are looking for. Caterers, churches, businesses as well as bigger families are our customer base,” says Erenwert. “However, we also see neighbors and friends sharing cases together which allows them to see the value. Our biggest challenge will be to control the pack size where people find value in our product and don’t have too much waste,” declared Erenwert.

More than 600 items
Currently, more than 600 produce items are available for online purchase, “but we want our customers to dictate the catalogue,” says Erenwert. “We will try to offer what they ask for.” While the selection and value are great, the last piece is offering an exceptional service level. If ordered by 9 am, your products will be delivered the same day. If ordered before 2 pm, delivery will take place the following morning. Produce can be ordered at www.brothersproducewholesale.com.
