"Joey Deen: "More limes from Brazil, less from Mexico"

First Mexican limes arrived at Denimpex

On Friday the first Mexico limes of the season were unloaded at Denimpex. "We are pleasantly surprised with the quality and colour. The limes are very firm and the colour is a very dark green, like we should expect from the Mexico limes," says Joey Deen. "Despite the market still being a bit lower than two weeks ago, everyone is still very satisfied with it. Brazil has shipped around 6% more than in the same period in previous years, but Mexico has shipped around 14% less. All in all not any huge differences. The market in the United States has been stable at a comparable level to Europe for a while, despite the prices being lower, as the costs are also lower, causing the same result below the line."

"There are two areas in Brazil - Sao Paolo and Bahia - where the limes come from. The harvest in Sao Paolo is just about coming to an end now and we will have to switch to Bahia. We are therefore expecting a dip in the export volume from Brazil for a period of two to four weeks. This will hopefully cause a revival in the market, but time will tell," continues Joey. "We are very careful when selecting parties. At the end of the season in Sao Paolo the limes are always a bit lighter, so a good selection before leaving is certainly needed to prevent the limes arriving here as lemons."

"If the supply of lemons doesn't get going, it is expected that the lime market will find its way upwards as far as the prices are concerned. We have developed a programme for weekly arrivals from both Brazil and Mexico to still be able to serve all customers," concludes the importer.
