Analysis of melon and watermelon market

Spain: Average watermelon price drops 0.14 €/kg in a week

The melon market is currently very active, with consumption boosted by optimum quality in terms of both organoleptic characteristics and netting.

However, the monitoring report of the protected horticulture sector, published by the Prices and Markets Observatory of the Government of Andalusia, said that, on week 20 (from 11 to 17 May), the average price for this product dropped to 0.45 Euro/kg, mostly as a result of the increase in the volumes marketed. The larger calibre Piel de Sapo batches are reaching prices of between 0.85 and 0.90 Euro/kg.

As for watermelons, while temperatures in Spain are boosting consumption, in Europe, during the said week, the weather has become colder, and in just seven days the price has dropped from an average of 0.50 Euro/kg to 0.36 Euro/kg.

Watermelon production volumes remain at lower levels than in previous campaigns, and although they are starting to recover, there is still a shortage of larger calibres.
