Venezuela: Tachira produces 18 tons of potatoes per hectare

The regional director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Rafael Castro, said that potato production in the Socialist Production Unit (UPS) Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, Aldea Caricuena, which is located in Tachiar, was having yields of 15 to 18 tons per hectare.

Castro stated that this production was achieved by planting certified seed imported from Canada, which was delivered through funding to 356 producers who planted 208 hectares.

"We are letting the people of Venezuela know that Táchira, which is an agricultural power, won't stop producing. We are producing throughout the whole year," he said.

He also stressed that the Andean state also produce other products, such as beets, coriander, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, paprika and onion, among others.

"The Andes has not stopped producing and this year we have excellent production conditions and our projections are we will produce more than expected," he said.

Meanwhile, producer Pedro Cosne added these "seeds are excellent because they are certified."

Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture and Lands, José Luis Berroterán, stated that this year's potato production would amount to nearly 550,000 tons in 20,500 hectares in the country.

He said that, with these figures, Venezuela would be five kilograms above what is required within the nutritional requirements of potato consumption, i.e. about 15 kilograms.
