Italy: slow strawberry market in Bologna

After a good start with high prices, things in Bologna's wholesale market seem to have changed. "Lately, there have been quality problems, especially with the Spanish produce. What is more, there is a lot of produce available and the weather hasn't helped."

"Strawberries are a delicate product and their quality depends a lot on the weather, especially for what concerns dampness and rain." The bad weather of the past few weeks has affected the produce, that of Spain in particular."

This of course influenced market trends. "We expected certain prices but things did not go as we had hoped. Premium quality strawberries manage to reach €2-3/kg, but the rest is doing poorly - we saw low-quality fruit with practically no shelf-life being sold at 40-50 cents per kilo."

"But the real problem lies with the market, as demand is very slow despite the good volumes. We are waiting for things to change, but probably we will have to put up with this situation for some time yet."
