Jonathan Vandesande, Weiss:

"Volatile prices make cucumbers harder to sell"

The weather is good, so summer vegetables are in demand. Products like lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers are seeing a lot of trade. According to Jonathan Vandesande of the Weiss company, there's a lot of demand for lettuce in Germany at the moment. "On April 21, we sold quite a bit of lettuce. Of course the sun greatly influences sales. In Germany, they don't have sufficient production of their own yet, but that may change from one day to the next. The production there is expected to increase in the coming time, and for us it'll grind to a halt."

Withdrawal price cucumbers?

Jonathan observes that the lettuce was around 20 cents yesterday. "It's been a lot higher in the recent past. Lettuce growers have had a good winter. Production is high at the moment. With the sun shining, lettuce and other vegetables grow very quickly in a greenhouse. The same goes for cucumbers. At auction, I saw great masses being supplied. It's possible that they will fetch the withdrawal price on April 22. In any case, it won't be far off. Today, 12 to 15 cents was given. Production is increasing very fast. Last season, the cucumber was also a volatile product. Selling has become more difficult. You either have prices of more than 10 Euro a crate, or you're stuck with it, so to speak, at 2 Euro."

When it comes to tomatoes, he sees a relatively good market. "There are still some Spanish and Moroccan ones on the market, but the Belgian ones are of better quality and prices are very reasonable." Bell pepper growers, he says, have had a good week. "The peak was 3 Euro per kilo for red bell peppers."
