Mexico: The mango harvest starting earlier, bigger volumes

According to the largest exporter of mangoes in Sinaloa, Ismael Diaz Murillo, everything suggests that the mango production from Sinaloa will break a record because the harvests started early and they will yield 40 percent more volume.

Estimates are that the income generated by the mango harvest in the southern orchards will be almost 50 percent higher than in previous seasons.

"Starting the mango harvest before in Sinaloa will be historic," said Diaz Murillo. "We begin the first cuts of the Ataulfo and Tommy varieties in the orchards in southern California this week. What's historical about this is that, in the history of fruit growing, the harvest, which used to begin in May or June, had never started in April."

According to the exporter, "the mango is coming strong, with a great production and a longer harvest season as it's starting earlier, as we've never seen before," he said.

Nayarit producers are already cutting fruit and Sinaloa will start doing it next Tuesday.

Diaz Murillo predicted that, because the price in the marketing of the productions from Chiapas and Oaxaca had remained stable, the trend would be the same as the productions of Nayarit and Sinaloa together.

Another factor in favour of mango producers and exporters from Sinaloa is that the orchards will continue producing up to August, which will increase their volume between 40 and 50 percent, he said.

"It seems that there will be more mango this year than last season, because the trees have bloomed more than usual."
