Spain and Italy dominate the German strawberry market
Losses in price because of worse quality
The German wholesale markets are being dominated by Spanish and Italian strawberries. Thus, in the 15th calendar week, Spanish strawberries had a market share of 61.5 percent and Italian strawberries one of 26.4 percent. Because of the larger quantities, these are being traded at favourable prices. Spanish varieties are being sold at around 1.78 euro per kilo, while Italian strawberries still fetch a price of 3.48 euro per kilo. Some Spanish or Italian batches show problems with their quality, which results in a loss of price.
Dutch strawberries stand out
Strawberries from the Netherlands attracted a lot of interest, despite the high price of 3.40 euro for 500 grams. A reason for this were a good colouring and a flawless taste of the red berries. Strawberries from the Netherlands have a market share of around 6.6 percent. Because of the great supply, on the wholesale, prices of strawberries are tending to fall. The offer in Germany was completed by Greek and Moroccan strawberries. While Greek strawberries have a market share of 6.6 percent, Moroccan strawberries have a market share of 0.7 percent.
