New apple variety more popular than Elstar

German company, Krings Obstbau, has an area of 120 acres filled with several apple varieties. The company will soon release a new apple variety on the market and will be the exclusive distributor in Germany. Krings has signed a commercial agreement with ABCz for apple 33/1/77. Previously ABCz closed a license agreement with breeder Better3Fruit.

First commercial volumes in 2016
"Apple 33/1/77 was developed and selected by us for it's exceptional taste and texture. Once consumers taste the apple they will be convinced," says Herbert Knuppen from Kings. It is a cross between the Golden Delicious apple and a scab resistant variety. The apple blossoms like the Golden Delicious variety and can be harvested at the end of September. It has a sweet, juicy, aromatic taste, with a bit of a bite to it. It is red with a green/yellow background. This apple has a long shelf life and stays crisp even after storage." This apple, now referred to as 33/1/77, will receive it's name at the beginning of next season. 5,000 trees have been planted and within the next five years they want to reach an area of 50 acres in Germany. The first commercial volumes are expected to be ready by the 2016 season.

More popular than Elstar
Herbert Knuppen from Krings: "After five years of testing we are fully confident in apple 33/1/77. These can be stored until June and will not get greasy. "We are confident that retailers will want 33/1/77 because of the durability of the apple and also because consumers will be convinced by the crispy taste. "Through several tests we have discovered that apple 33/1/77 is more popular than Elstar."
