Campaign remembers wartime potato effort
The introduction of Potato Pete and the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign encouraged people to grow and eat more potatoes and vegetables and maintain their health. Today, dietitians argue that wartime diets were among the healthiest the British population has ever eaten, which in turn led to improvements in the nation’s health.
Potato Council marketing manager, Kate Cox, said: “Potatoes are just as relevant now as they have always been. However, customers have more choice than ever today and it is important to show them why potatoes remain a key part of their diet.
"We’ve given five wartime potato-based recipes a modern makeover. These will not only show their versatility but also help re-connect consumers with potatoes; demonstrating they are just as tasty and nutritious today as they have always been.
“This is a great opportunity for the industry to celebrate the continued importance of the national crop as a nutrient-rich, tasty food. This can be done by sharing our recipes, as well as healthy facts from our website www.lovepotatoes.co.uk.”
The recipes will be available from the end of April and include ‘Woolton Pie’, ‘Oxford Potato Soup’, ‘Scotch Hotpot’, ‘Potato Piglets’ and ‘Sole Otero’.
In addition, an extensive range of educational worksheets, recipe cards and teacher resources have been developed for key stages 1, 2 and 3, as part of Potato Council’s educational programmes.
Teaching children where food comes from and how it is produced helps to shape choices they make about their diets in later life. The educational worksheets which include details on the historic occasion and a list of war time recipes are available at gyop.potato.org.uk.
