Matamoros, Coahuila

Mexico: Melon plantations hardly affected by hailstorm

The President of the Association of Melon and watermelon producers from Matamoros (Coahuila), Jesus Zarate Muñoz, said that, so far, the melon plantations didn't seem very affected by yesterday's hailstorm, which started at 18:30 in the evening (local time).

He said they hadn't been able to visit all of the approximately 700 hectares of melon and watermelon crops, but that they would continue inspecting the area tomorrow morning to finish their evaluation.

Jose Maria Morelos, a melon producer in that municipality, stated that, according to the preliminary evaluation of the area they had visited and from the information other producers had given him, the hailstorm had affected approximately 5 per cent of the crops, i.e. up to now there was devastation because the rains hadn't lasted long.
