Packaging can help fresh produce stand out

When a consumer walks down the produce aisle and finds several types of lettuce, what makes that buyer choose one brand over another? There are many factors that go into that decision, but in an industry where one's competitors sell products that are roughly the same in appearance, innovative packaging and branding can be the difference between a trip to the checkout stand and being left in the produce aisle.

“Brandcheck is about joining business strategy with a client's packaging,” said Ferguson. “We take a product, compare it to its peers and find ways in which clients can gain a competitive advantage.”

Brandcheck offers brand and product strategy services with a focus on packaging. That includes advising clients about brand strategy, providing consumer research, analyzing the competition and bringing all of that knowledge to bear when it comes time to design a clients packaging. Their competitive packaging analysis, where Brandcheck identifies whitespace – or previously-unexploited areas where a business can gain an edge – to achieve differentiation, has been honored with a Global Leadership award by the PAC Packaging Consortium, the largest packaging industry association in North America.

In addition to design advice, Brandcheck also provides cost reduction services when it comes time to figure out the nuts and bolts of rolling out new packaging. By investigating the costs and benefits of automating various steps of a production process that often requires lots of manual labor, new packaging could be less costly when the added value of new packaging is taken into account.

“The fresh produce industry is such a competitive space, and, often, the only way to achieve differentiation with a commodity product is through packaging,” said Ian Ferguson of Brandcheck. “We're able to help clients in a lot of different industries, but the strength we have in fresh produce is getting us traction there.”
