UK: 5,000th child on board the Potato Factory

Sherwood Primary School in Fulwood has this week had a visit from Billy Branstonʼs Amazing Potato Factory. And the school also has the privilege of having one of its pupils being the 5,000th child on board the Potato Factory, which was launched in September 2014.

Conceived by leading potato supplier, Branston, the initiative has seen a double decker bus converted into a fully functioning mobile classroom touring primary schools nationwide. The company is supporting the Tesco Eat Happy Project, which aims to educate schoolchildren about where their food comes from.

The vehicle hosts a variety of activities where children can gain hands-on experience and learn more about how potatoes are grown as well as what happens in a real potato factory.

Activities on board the bus are tailored to fit with the Key Stage One and Two frameworks, with nutrition and healthy eating also playing an important role.

James Truscott, Sales and Marketing Director at Branston, commented: “Weʼre keen to get the message out there about how great potatoes are and how theyʼre really key for a healthy balanced diet, and Billy Branstonʼs Potato Factory has been a huge success so far. When we first put the tour on the road, we had no idea how well received it would be and weʼre thrilled to be welcoming the 5,000th child on board the bus in Preston.”

David Fann, Headteacher at Sherwood Primary, commented, “Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed their visit from Billy Branstonʼs Amazing Potato Factory, and have not stopped talking about it! The activities on board have been brilliant, and the whole experience has far exceeded our expectations. Itʼs an added bonus that one of our pupils has helped the initiative reach a massive milestone of 5,000 visitors.”

Feedback from schools has been positive, with praise for the originality of the idea, and the way the children enjoy the learning experience on board. Much of 2015 is already booked up, but there are a few slots available.
