Steady Plátano de Canarias production

The Canary banana production last year stood at 364,257 metric tonnes; a figure exceeding that achieved in 2013 by 486 tonnes.

For the Association of Canary Banana Producer Organisations (ASPROCAN), these figures are positive in as much as they are in line with the average historic annual production of 375,000 tonnes, taking into account the significant losses registered last year, estimated at 15,415,750 kilos, due to the effects of wind storms.

By islands, Tenerife was the one concentrating most of the production, with 41.7% of the total, followed by La Palma with 35%, Gran Canaria with 21.1%, La Gomera with 1.3% and Hierro with 0.8%.

Most of the production, 91.24%, was shipped to Spain's peninsular market, where a total of 332,362,828 kilos were marketed.

Regarding sales in the mainland market, according to figures provided by Nielsen, Canary and non-European bananas registered a 0.5% increase in sales, which contrasted with the 1% decline for fruit overall.

Within the category, non-European bananas accounted for 28% of the sales-generated revenue, while Canary bananas reached 72%.

In the case of Canary bananas, this share was 1.9% lower than in 2013, although in absolute terms the decline was slightly less than 0.5%.

This was partly the result of the evolution of peninsular consumer prices, which last year increased by 3.2% for the Canary fruit compared to 2013, while in the case of non-European bananas the price level remained stable.

The price increase of Canary bananas resulted in an increase of 11% in the price differential with respect to non-European bananas.

In this sense, the average selling price for the fruit in the Peninsula stood at 1.96 Euro per kilo in 2014; however, prices at origin for Canary producer organisations stood at an average of 0.81 Euro per kilo, more than 2% lower than the 0.83 Euro per kilo obtained in 2013.

The Canary banana producer organisations also continued their social work and collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). In 2014, the sector donations totalled 720,922 kilos, which were delivered to 26 food banks across the country.
