US: Spinach not popular to grow
CityAg Produce only grows organic spinach, which is even harder to find than conventional spinach. “Demand for spinach is still going up, especially for organic spinach”, said Beyer. “There is not enough organic produce for any commodity”, he added. “Spinach is one of the better superfoods and has a lot in it. It has a hearty leaf and is a popular ingredient, especially in salads.” Limited availability and rising demand lead to good prices. “At the moment, prices are in the mid to high $20s and they never really go below $20. Sometimes, they go as high as $40 to $50”, Beyer said.
Spinach from CityAg Produce is heavily distributed throughout California, but goes as far as the East Coast. It is sold to supermarkets, wholesalers and a few processors and is sold by the bunch.
