Claudio Gorini (ALMA)

Italy: Shortage of green avocados on the market

"This year the Israeli production of green avocados was rather small due to the bad weather," explains Claudio Gorini, sales manager for AL.MA.

"There have been no great problems in December and early January, when the produce was little but at least constant, then the rain and cold temperatures affected production."

The situation hasn't changed, as ships are left in Israeli ports waiting to be loaded. As expected, prices have shot up, also due to the increase in quotations of the Spanish produce.

"The situation is even worse for Hass, because no produce has arrived form Israel in the last month and that from Spain is sold at exorbitant prices."

The impact of the Euro/Dollar exchange rate
Luckily avocados are paid for in Euro because, "if they were paid for in Dollars, they would have to endure the fluctuations of an unfavourable exchange rate too."

"We lost 20% in the last few months on products like pineapples, as they are paid for in Dollars. This increase in cost led to an increase in sales prices, so less volumes are sold."

"Pineapples are just an example, the trend is the same for all similar products," concludes Gorini.
