Jeroen Buyck, Calsa:

"Canadians must learn to eat Belgian pears"

Belgian pears have been allowed to enter Canada since December 2014. So far, Calsa is the only exporter who has sent them to Canada, and according to Jeroen Buyck there has been a positive response in this country, but it will still take a while for them to get used to the Belgian pears.

Winning ground
"We have been working on this market intensively for a few months now and the first reactions from Canada are good," he says, satisfied. "it isn't difficult to export something, but the products being accepted are completely different. We expect that winning ground in Canada will take time. The difficult part is that the Canadians really have to eat the pear. The Belgian pear looks odd to them. They associate a yellow appearance with a pear, but the green and bronze Belgian pear is completely different for this consumer."

Russia was an important buyer for Calsa, but the company is very active in entering new markets, including Canada. They started out small in a number of countries years ago, but the volumes are slowly extending.

Various Belgian media has already indicated that the VBT reports that up to 10,000 tonnes of pears could be shipped to Canada per year.
